Freshmen Engineering Learning Teams

What are the Freshmen Engineering Learning Teams?

The Freshmen Engineering Learning Teams are Academic Learning Teams (ALT) of the College of Engineering. We will be offering 2 teams in the fall of 2009 on two separate residence hall floors. Each team is made up of up to 25 male and female first-year students who take the same blocked section of courses in the Freshmen Engineering curriculum. The in-class learning will be supplemented with co-curricular activities. Those activities involve 1 - 2 structured academic and 1 - 2 social events per semester with faculty, staff, and the students in the Learning Teams. Students in the Learning Teams are likely to get together often for studying, reviewing, and discussing course work in the residence hall.

Highlights from Fall 2008

  • The Freshmen Engineering Learning Team members had an average Fall 08 GPA of 3.08. The average GPA for all freshmen engineering students on campus was 2.89. Learning Team members completed course hours at a passing rate of 96.3% compared with 93.2% for all engineering freshmen. It must be said that the average LT High School GPA (3.82) was higher than the rest of the engineering freshmen (3.78) while average ACT scores were identical at 28.4.
  • 100% of students in the Learning Team were retained to the University from Fall 2008 to Spring 2009 versus 92.9% of all freshmen in the College of Engineering

What courses will I be taking?
Students will be enrolled in the following courses together:

  • GNEG 1111 Introduction to Engineering I
  • MATH 2554 Calculus I
  • PHSY 2054 University Physics I
  • ENGL 1013 Composition I (some students)
  • CHEM 1103 University Chemistry I (some students)

Where will I be living?

The Learning Teams will be located in Yocum Hall.

What about my preferred roommate?

If you would like to room with a specific person, that student does not need to be a participant in the Learning Team. However, due to limited space, roommate preference will be honored on a first-come, first-served basis.

OK, I want in. How do I sign up?

First, make sure you have a housing contact. You will not be eligible to participate until you have a contract and have paid the $235 advanced payment to University Housing. Next, submit the Online Freshman Engineering ALT Application Form

Once your eligibility is confirmed, make sure you have a Shop-N-Swap date and time. In Shop-N-Swap you will be able to pick a room reserved for your specific ALT. Please note that you must live on the floor on which the ALT is located. You cannot participate in the ALT and live on another floor or in another residence hall. Assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis and if interested you should act quickly to secure a space. Your space in the learning team will ultimately be confirmed when you register for classes during Summer Orientation in June.
