Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Freshman Engineering Program?
This is a program designed to establish the foundation for academic and professional success of freshman entering the College of Engineering. In this program all freshmen will take a common set of courses for one year and then choose a discipline-specific undergraduate program. Also included in the freshman engineering program is a student services program that includes career and personal advising, tutoring, and peer mentoring.

What is meant by a common set of courses?
The Freshman Engineering Academic Program requires all freshmen to take the same coursework for the first two semesters of enrollment. Afterwards, a discipline-specific set of courses is chosen.

When do I choose my major?
Once the two-semester Freshman Engineering Academic Program is completed and the student has maintained a GPA of at least 2.0 a specific major may be chosen within the College of Engineering. This is done before registration for the student’s sophomore year.

What if I have AP credit for courses?
Students with AP credit are advised on a case-by-case basis and given the opportunity to choose advanced, replacement courses that are appropriate for any College of Engineering undergraduate program or for a program that they are seriously considering. However, ENGL 1013: Composition I and ENGL 1023T: Technical Composition II are closely coordinated with the Introduction to Engineering course sequence. Therefore, General Engineering students are encouraged to complete the Composition sequence regardless of their academic background.

What if I get put into Pre-Cal instead of Calculus I?
For new students who are placed into MATH 1285: Pre-Calculus, the MATH 2554: Calculus I and PHYS 2054: University Physics I requirements shift to the spring semester, the Humanities/Social Science Elective requirement shifts to the fall semester, and PHYS 2074: University  Physics II is removed as an option for the Freshman Science Elective. These students are encouraged to complete MATH 2564: Calculus II during the summer prior to their sophomore year.

What if I know I want to be a Chemical Engineer?
New freshmen and transfer students with less than 24 credit hours can enter the university as Chemical Engineering students if they qualify to take or have credit for University Chemistry II (CHEM 1123); students can qualify to take CHEM 1123 by demonstrating satisfactory performance on the chemistry proficiency examination administered by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Does the College of Engineering have a Scholarship Program?
Yes. Click here for more information

When do I get a class schedule?
Incoming freshmen will receive class schedules during their summer orientation session.

What do I need for orientation?
Please visit orientation page

What type of calculator/computer do I need?
Acceptable calculators are determined by course instructors, however in the engineering field, a graphing calculator is helpful. The type of computer needed is really up to the student. A student will need to be able to access the internet and be able to process text documents, excel file, etc… However, a computer is not a requirement because there are numerous computer labs on campus that are available to students.
